Nuclear Waste Management

The nuclear power company TVO provides for the management of the nuclear waste it produces and, for its part, is responsible for the costs of nuclear waste management. According to the Finnish Nuclear Energy Act, nuclear waste produced in Finland must be treated, stored, and finally disposed of in Finland, and the import of nuclear waste to Finland is prohibited.

TVO manages the low and intermediate-level operating waste of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, to be finally disposed in the final repository for operating waste. TVO also manages itself the interim storage of spent nuclear fuel.

TVO and Fortum Power and Heat Oy have established Posiva Oy to manage the investigation and practical implementation of the final disposal of the spent fuel from their nuclear power plants. The spent fuel of the Olkiluoto and Loviisa nuclear power plants will be finally disposed of in the bedrock in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki.
